Opinions Wanted

I’m almost done moving into this new web theme. I’m fairly pleased with the decorating scheme of the new site, and the organization of the various pages. I’m always up for constructive feedback, though. Are there features you’d like to see on the site? Do you want better access to older articles, or the blog roll? Let me know.

Obviously this site is here in part to promote my writing, but I never want to sound like all I do is shrilly promote my work. I’d get pretty bored doing that, and I think that kind of thing is deadly dull to read. As a result,  in amongst news about what I’m working on and how it’s going, there will also be posts about ancient Arabia or other history topics, old adventure stories and writers, genre, pulp, sword-and-sorcery, the craft of writing, the publishing industry, and gaming. If my knee fully heals maybe I’ll finally get back to working toward my second degree black belt and start talking about karate.

But I’m throwing open the gates, and asking for your opinions. Are there topics you’d like me to cover that I’ve never addressed? Are there things you’d like to see more of? Questions you have about writing or publishing? Let me know!

I’m going to walk away from the computer now and get ready for Gen Con, where I’ll be all day Saturday. I hope I’ll see some of you there. While I’m away I won’t be able to read any responses, but I’ll look forward to doing so on my return.

  1. Site looks good, Howard. These blogs are a reflection of you, your work and how you like to present yourself to the world. Seriously – no worries at all about how you handle this going forward. Your previous messages have been a great way of keeping up with all things Howard Andrew Jones, so maybe just more of that.

My only request would be to continue to link your blog posts to Facebook and Twitter – much easier to keep up with your blog posts that way.

    • Thanks, Steve. Will do. It will give me something to use Twitter for — I still haven’t gotten completely familiar with what I am supposed to be doing with the thing.

  2. I’d agree about linking the blog posts — makes it much easier not to miss anything. I like the new look, particualarly the fierce photo. That’s what, an attack turkey?

    • That is actually a rooster, and because my kids handled him so much when he was a chick, he was pretty gentle and didn’t object to being picked up. Unfortunately he was killed defending the chickens from a fox.

More of this. New web layout looks good and functions well (although, the link to Scott Oden’s site is his old blog, not his new one).
More use of tags. I was intrigued to read your recommendation of “Mindjammer”, and it’d be cool to click on a “sci fi” tag at the end and see what other science fiction books you’ve recommended.
Also a topic of interest to me… but maybe not anyone else. Music. What do you listen to while writing? Any good arabic music you can recommend to help set that old Baghdad vibe?

    • Hey Mick — will do! I don’t actually read too much modern science fiction, but when I do, I’ll make them easy to find.

And sure, I can post about music soon.

  4. Hi Howard.

Definitely more of what enthuses you is what you should be doing. If doing the blog posts are a chore, then the topics are wrong. So, blog about what enthuses you, be it an archaeological dig in Iraq, or a cool album you’ve been writing to.

    • Thanks, Paul. I think you’re right. I’ve been meaning to post about the ancient canals of Baghdad, so maybe I’ll get on that soon. It’s hard to believe how many of them crossed the city and surrounding region.
