Link Day!

Kirk ArmageddonWhile I am proud to have earned a black belt in karate, my first real schooling in manly fight moves came from Captain James T. Kirk. Most of his best are cataloged here. Get thee over there and soak up some storied wisdom.

Have you heard about Viking sunstones, and how they might have been used to navigate across vast distances even when the sun wasn’t visible? Well, I hadn’t. Check out this cool link.

Notwithstanding that a fox broke into our hen house a couple of years ago and killed almost two dozen chickens, I still think this fox video is adorable.

I’ve got a lot of good news that I can’t quite share yet, and with a deadline looming I should probably keep things short this morning.

First, the illustrious Dave Gross invited me over to chat about writing and our mutual love of the works of the late, great Roger Zelazny. Drop by and see what we had to say, and then I hope you’ll poke around a little and see what some talented writers have said elsewhere on his site.

Second, a nice review of Stalking the Beast popped up on my radar the other day. Always nice to see. The tie-in work doesn’t get reviewed nearly as often.

Third, a lovely review of The Desert of Souls appeared after its UK release.

Fourth and final, I’ve updated my 2014 Appearances page. It’s about time, as I’m flying to Detroit for ConFusion this Friday! I hope I’ll see a few of you there.

Three

Three quick things today, as I’m picking up more and more speed on the current project and don’t want to step away from it for too long.

First, I’m over at Suvudu all this week. Matt Staggs invited me to Take Five and talk about my new book, Stalking the Beast. So I did, and you can find what I said over there.

Second, I found a really interesting article about character construction and what looks like a bevy of more essays all about writing techniques over yonder. Take a look, and if you like what you find, come back and point out the best to me.

Third, Lou Anders sent me a link to a great article — with additional extra links to some swell looking reference material — all about adding verisimilitude to your fantasy setting. Get ye forth and read it.

Hercules

In my continuing quest to be all over the interwebs, I’m over at the talented Garrett Caltera’s blog along with some luminaries, and we’re all talking about famous forgotten books. Not books that are “curious” or “interesting” but GOOD books that someone really ought to still be reading.

Mine is Edison Marshall’s Earth Giant, and if you want to find out why I think it’s so cool, follow the link. Hint — heroic fiction fans would love it. Seriously, anyone who loves Leiber or REH or Lamb should be reading the thing.

Gaming and Jungling

Late last week an essay I wrote about gaming and writing game novels went live over at the Paizo blog. I talk a little about my gaming philosophy and how it impacted my writing.

And Charles Rutledge of Singular Points sent me a link to a British site. In the past I’ve described the purple pulp glories of Tarzan clone Ki-Gor both at Black Gate and here on the site. Well, feast your eyes upon this. The aforementioned British site has scans of several Ki-Gor novellas, including two of the very best (also including a few dogs, for Ki-Gor quality varies wildly).

Here, then, if you dare, is a link to “The Beast Gods of Atlantis.” If you’ve never read pulp or don’t know about Ki-Gor, you might want to visit the essays that Charles and I wrote on the subject so that you have a better idea of just what you’re in for.

In other news, I spent yesterday afternoon and evening digging yet ANOTHER hole, for more waterpipe burst. Yay. I hope to actually do some more writing today after I spend a little more time on the hole.

With all this talk about the excellence of John Hocking’s Conan and the Emerald Lotus, it pleases me to be able to point all of you to a new short story from his Archivist sequence, over at Black Gate. Cool stuff!

Also, my writer friend Harry James Connolly has a really cool sounding series fans of heroic fantasy ought to go check out. The Kickstarter is here, and it’s already funded… but there’s two weeks left if you want to make sure you get a copy!

And speaking of kickstarters, it looks like there will definitely be a Dabir and Asim story in Kaiju Rising, because my secret author status was unlocked! To all you who signed up to help spread the word I offer you my sincere thanks. For those of you who are just hearing about it, sign up for a copy here, and help back the project! Two tiers yet remain to be unlocked — author Peter Swallow and some more art. I hope you’ll swing by and consider it!

Now I must away. I have to finish a Dabir and Asim story!

Link Day

(Link Man copyright Darian Jones.)

It’s Link Day again here at Jones central, as I’m hard at work battling mountains of prose.

First, a fascinating but grisly look at some skeletons dripping with jewels found in catacombs and churches in Europe. Seriously, if you’re creeped out by skeletons and tombs, don’t follow the link. As an added bonus, the captions are perhaps among the worst ever written, but not quite so bad as to be actually amusing. They just repeat, word-for-word, what is said in the accompanying text.

Second, some ruined cities, as revealed at I09. Some are more mysterious than others, but it is worth a read.

Third, and completely unrelated to the theme I have going with Indiana Jones-like stuff, a great post from author Chuck Wendig on 25 ways to revise your work.

My work here is done. Link Man, away!
